Seems I remember icon's mail functions needs a non-encrypted password for
the SMTP server connection. Gmail requires an encrypted password so Gmail
never worked for me either. I use a local SMTP server the University still
runs and allows non-encrypted passwords to freely flow over the internet
(not the best situation to have).
Related to zip files, they are usually pretty hard to send since they are
executable files. I can send jcamp dx all day long. We rely heavily upon
this feature. Otherwise, we have to use the archive to server function and
everyone has to map their machines to that particular server. While not
hard, you do have to set up the remote connection, which again requires
some fiddling on Linux machines.
