Back in my corporate life, windows computers were administered by IT, we were
not even given administrative passwords to the computers that ran instruments.
IT would routinely push updates to the computers without warning and because of
this, all of our NMRs ran Linux. It was not unusual to come into work in the
morning and find that half of the mass spectrometers were no longer functioning
because of unwanted updates. Meanwhile the NMRs just kept on running. Fortunately
our IT department was frightened of Linux and left us to our own devices, literally.
