Ken, we haven't tried running NEOs at lower air pressure. We have NMRs in
three locations. One used house N2 from a large exterior tank that went to
the whole building. It supplied ~85 psi. However, consumption of N2 went up
significantly and we're still in the middle of getting flow meters put into
the system to figure out where all the gas is going. In the interim, we're
using 230L N2 tanks set to higher pressure.
Our other two locations rely on rotary screw air compressors that are
utilized either solely or primarily by our facility. The downstream
pressures for these are ~110 psi, in part because we have nitrogen
generators running off this compressed air for some of our mass specs, and
they need a higher pressure than the NMRs. While being in charge of the
compressors means more work/headaches to keep them going, it also means we
have more control over when they are maintained and what extra loads do or
don't get added in. If you're going the compressor route, I definitely
second the recommendations to have a good-sized ballast tank, as well as
oil and particulate filters. And if you're running VT experiments, an extra
in-line dryer/n2 generator is a good idea as well.
