Re: [AMMRL] Facility policies for Variable Temperature Experiments?

Dear Ken,

at my facility, only a select group of users receives training and is allowed
to operate the instruments without full automation. If one of these users
wishes to perform VT, they receive additional training. However, this training
is only granted if they are required to do VT experiments regularly, and in
the past, there were only a few users who performed them by themselves. My
colleague therefore performs nearly all VT experiments at our facility.

The buffer will be 5 K to the freezing point (freezing is only problematic
with water) and 10 K to the boiling point. It is interesting how many Phds
want to measure under reflux conditions. We set the gas flow through the shim
stack to the highest value and immediately heat/cool if the shim stack
temperature turns red (Bruker TS3). Overnight VT experiments are not permitted
(unless the temperature is close to room temperature).

Best regards,
Sebastian

We're revamping and/or putting in place various policies/procedural documents
now that we have moved on from the Era of the Flood and into the Era of
Shiny New NMRs.

I'm curious what kind of specific guidelines you have in place for variable
temperature NMR?

  * Do you require a specific grade of NMR tube?

  * New NMR tubes?

  * What buffer do you allow between the solvent freezing/boiling point
and the target temperature? 10, 15, 20 degrees?

  * Anything else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance!
