Hi Ken,
We've set up VNC on our instrument PCs, using TightVNC for Windows and x11vnc
for Linux. Only NMR staff have access to the VNC passwords, and VNC connections
are restricted to our dedicated NMR sub-network on campus—meaning researchers
cannot connect from their labs. I’d never run an unencrypted VNC server on
the wider campus network, I just don’t think they are secure enough for
that environment.
While I haven’t used Bruker’s IconNMR WEB interface myself, I think it
might be the best way forward in your case. It’s also more user-friendly,
as it only requires a web browser for researchers to check.

Hi Everyone,
My facility houses Bruker, Agilent/Varian and JEOL systems which operate in
a queued walkup fashion. It has been requested that users be able to remotely
view these queues so that they don't have to walk all the way down thelab to
see which instruments are immediately available. (Did that sound snarkish?)
I'm curious if any of you have implemented anything like this? I know that
ICON, VnmrJ, and Delta can all be remotely accessed, but frankly I've never
implemented this. My fear is that each of these solutions would require
students to install the vendors NMR software to be able to accomplish this.
I would prefer a one size fits all solution. Something like VNC? I'd rather
not have to help 200 incoming and outgoing students annually get 3 different
NMR software systems installed and running on their laptops....
