Hi,
in a 400MR the "sample present" potentiometer is (rather badly unfortunately,
by someone with small hands) accessible by opening the left side panel and
reaching in to the left rear corner of the main PCB. In newer 400MR-DD2s
it is pulled out to the side and way better accessible that way.
In case you can't see the yellow LED on top of the upper barrel from standing/kneeling
in that position left of the console, it is best to have a second person eject/insert
and watch the LED status while you regulate the potentiometer such that it properly
detects the sample at the bottom and no sample when ejected.
As Ken correctly wrote it may be necessary to clean the bottom of the upper
barrel (for which you need to unscrew the aluminium tube from the bottom part to
properly access the spinner contact surface).
