this is a common problem with CD recording software on PC's. As a
default DOS 8+3 filenames are written.
Everything with less than 8 characters gets a dot and longer ones are
mangled even worse.

If your recording software permits Joliet CD file systems you will get
better retention of the original file names, but everything will be
lowercase (DOS file names are not case sensitive). The best solution is
to use the Rockridge (often called Romeo) file systems. These are case
sensitive and have real long file names. But to the best of my knowledge
only the old Easy CD-pro from Adaptec supported it. The new Easy CD
Creator from Adaptec does not and the CD software from Veritas doesn;t
either. The best software option for the PC is GEAR. It only has case
sensitivity problems, but does real long filenames. The price is the
major drawback but you can download a free demo.

If you want a truly UNIX/Solaris compatible, cheap solution, take your
PC and install LINUX. Linux comes with a variety of CD recording
software, which has no problems with the UNIX filenames, and it is free.
