Hi Luke,

Our unshielded 400 MHz is ~7.8 ft to the 5G line, and ~6.2 ft to the 10 G line,
as per the chart in our magnet manual. If that’s not available, you
might consider trying a smartphone app to confirm. I don’t know if that
helps – but maybe an engineer would sign off if it was “only” 10 G?

If you do go ahead, one concern is metal shavings from drill bits. For our
recovery system, we had to drill an aluminum support post just near the 5 G
line of one of our magnets. We had a vacuum running beside the drill bit
to capture dirt and shavings. As a backup, we made a ‘wall’
around the drill site with cardboard boxes.

Best,
Sameer

Hello Luke,

You say that the old 400MHz magnet is “… not decommissioned yet.”
Implicit in that statement is that the old 400MHz magnet will be decommissioned soon.

My suggestion: put a stop to the installation of the storage tank in question until
the old magnet is de-energized. Could your recovery system operate with two storage
tanks temporarily? Then, once the old magnet is removed, the third storage tank added?

Too many things can go horribly wrong when you have a big stray field and large, heavy
magnetic objects, as well was people working with heavy metal tools.
And this doesn’t even consider how difficult/impossible it will be to record
any useful data using the 400MHz.

Good luck.
Bob.

Hi All,

I'm seeking the collective wisdom regarding a site planning pickle.

We're replacing our old 400 MHz magnet/console later this summer. The grant
also included a full helium recovery system with three medium pressure storage
tanks that we're in the midst of installing. I think it was assumed the new
magnet would be installed before the recovery system, and that didn't happen.
The old magnet hasn't been decommissioned yet and it's unshielded. The 5 gauss
line extends ~7ft from the magnet, and the plan has one of the tanks crossing
it by a full foot. Each tank is 8.5ft ht, 3ft dm, magnetically susceptible
(steel?), and ~400 lbs. We have to permanently bolt down all three next week.
I can rearrange the plan, but it would be a tragedy for the lab layout, and
I'd never hear the end of it.

Does it seem like an acceptable risk to put that much metal inside the stray
field?

My building manager thinks we could slide the magnet a foot or two out of the
way with johnson bars. I've only ever heard the direst of warnings about
trying to move a magnet, and I'm skeptical we could even pull it off if we
tried.

Kind regards,
Luke
