Praxair is our supplier for nitrogen and helium. There nitrogen
dewars were always at least 30L short which means I had to order 2
dewars to fill my 3 magnets so I had to pay for storage for 2 dewars
monthly. Nitrogen dewars were in rough shape sometimes loose or
broken handles, sometimes no pressure, and release valves that freeze
open.
Invoicing was tricky because funds were directly withdrawn from our
accounts to pay Praxair. It was hard to reconcile our invoices with
University Supply Management because invoices were paid months later.
We order helium through our Physics dept. who in turn orders it from
Praxair. We have a standing order with them. The Physics dept. will
absorb any late deliveries by dipping into a 1500L emergency supply.
I'm not sure how often they have to do that.
Our helium dewars are filled and delivered from Delta, British
Columbia, 1150 km from the University of Alberta. It's not uncommon
to have 20% less than what you ordered. As a result of being so
remote (if you can call a city of over 1 million remote) we pay over
$12.00/L. How many out there have their own liquefier on their campus?
