I am curious to know what new spectrometer host workstations people have had
success with in moving beyond CentOS 7.
For ca. 20 years, I've had generally good luck buying any workstation and
getting Linux to run on it, eventually - the slowest problems to resolve came
from buying some new to the market workstations that had hardware where Linux
drivers weren't immediately available. Since then, I've gravitated towards
workstations on sale, aka last year's models, where any needed drivers are
reliably already out.
I've done a wave of Varian workstation replacements with sale-priced Dell
computers ... the unwelcome surprise with those was that the BIOS apparently
in all newer Dells does not support booting from legacy devices, like a USB
stick with a Linux installer on it. I was able to work around that by taking
out the internal M.2 drive from the new computer, running the Linux (Ubuntu)
installer on an old computer, then replacing the drive in the new computer.
But I wouldn't call this a feature. FWIW, these were about $700 desktops at
the sale price and they're performing very well with OpenVnmrJ.
What workstation configurations have people bought for Alma 9/Topspin that
they would recommend, or warn against?
Just out of curiosity, are other computer vendors also removing the legacy
boot option from BIOS? Does your institution mandate replacement of computers
after a certain number of years? Around here, administrator's computers are
replaced every 4 years. If there's a rule about lab computers being retired on
a schedule, it's not enforced. The computers I'm replacing had been running 24/7
for 10 years. I think it's time.

anecdotes about things that went wrong.
