Hi Ulli,

one additional comment is regarding the vibrations. unless the lab is on the
lowest floor, on grade, you need to worry about the vibrations on the floor
between the steel beams.

Going directly over a beam might be more stable than between beams.

Hi Ulli,

I agree that as long as you stay sufficiently far away, you should be fine.
Normally big static things such as structural members aren't as big a problem
as big mobile things like elevators. Even if you can't get to an ideal
solution, usually you can figure out a good enough configuration to make
things work right. And cryoshims can usually be adjusted to compensate
for things like that as well.

Cheers,
Mike

Dear Colleagues,

Dalhousie is planning a new building, which will also house the NMR facility.
We just learned that a changed plan is to build the new building using structural
steel (not concrete), and the question was raised, whether this will be a problem
for the NMR operation.

While this may not be ideal, we likely have no choice in this matter, but I
would appreciate any experiences or advice you can give me. (I couldn't find
anything in the archives). The magnets can be moved sufficiently inside the
room so that their 5 Gauss lines can be kept away from the walls. My feeling
is as long as we stay sufficiently far away, we should be fine. Do you agree?

Happy resonating,

Ulli
