 Hi Justin,

There are many factors in coming to the conclusion of which way to go with
the cooling of the compressor. First and foremost is reliability. You do want
to minimize the number of thermal cycles on the probe. One would think that
given that you currently have an air-cooled heat exchanger, you have concerns
over the house chilled water, or you would already be using it. The air
exchangers are rare, and really only used where the need is forced. The
compressors are fussy about the quality of the water/coolant being circulated
through them, and most often are isolated from the house chilled water with
a water/water exchanger such as a Haskris type unit which, in most cases,
is an active chiller in itself. let me know if you have any questions.
I'd be glad to further elucidate.

Dear Justin,

We have water-cooled compressors and I don't have experience with air-cooled
ones, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt. I'm generally happy with
ours but you do need to ensure that the water quality is good. We do that
by using Haskris chillers in between our processed chilled water and our
helium compressors. Additionally, if your building's chilled water needs to
go down for maintenance/construction (we're in the middle of it right now),
then you'll lose your ability to run the cryoprobes.
