Apologies for the non-NMR question, but I figured there was a good chance someone
in AMMRL (or a colleague of someone in AMMRL) might be able to help us out.
*TL;DR*
My colleague who runs our XPS would appreciate any information regarding log
files produced by the Avantage software (Windows) for a Thermo XPS K alpha
instrument. (i.e., where are the log files located; any useful info regarding
format; any recommendations regarding how others have generated time accounting
data for instruments running this software; etc.)
*Details*
Our department has moved all of our shared instruments to a user fee model for
cost recharge (it was a delightful 15 years not having to worry about this...)
At the moment, our XPS is using a "good faith" system where users are supposed
to log their time manually (good old fashioned paper and pencil). Not
surprisingly, this isn't working very well and a number of students are
consistently using the instrument for free without logging their time.
Based on my (recent) experience generating time accounting logs from the Vnmrj
and IconNMR logs, I would expect the XPS software to have a log or several logs
buried somewhere within the application directories that we can use to generate
time accounting data.
Notes: Similar to the NMR software, this software runs in a dedicated account
that's always logged in, so they can't track simple log in/log out times.
Furthermore, with overnight runs, there's often dead time after a run finishes
before the user is back the following morning; so, actual run time data would
be the best to extract.
This is a Thermo XPS K alpha running the Avantage software on a Windows computer.
