Are you seeing the coupling between the lactate *CH3 and the neighboring
*CH(OH)? Referring to the BRMB record for D-Lactate:

Hi All,
I'm baffled by some signals in an HMBC (not decoupled). The sample is a
metabolomics sample where cells were fed uniformly labeled 13C glucose, then
harvested after an hour. I've seen data like this before, but assumed I had
overlapping signals that were labeled and had 13C-13C, as well as 13C-1H
residual couplings. The lactate signal for the CH3 group shows coupling to
the CH2 for endogenous glucose and the labeled glucose. It also shows
extraneous couplings near the C=O in almost a J-resolve pattern. What
am I missing?
