Dear Bert,
there was an incident in the late 80's where a Oxford 500 round bottom magnet
experienced a catstrophic failure during warm up after energization. liquid
nitrogen entered the vacum chamber and the resulting over pressure led to
the bolts being sheared off at the flange and the top of the magnet including
the coil lifting up quite a bit. Plus the mess of mylar in the lab was epic.
At the time the magnets did not have drop plates. As a fix for these magnets
Oxford exchanged the boltsholding the flange together for some that would
allow a small separation of upper and lower part of the dewar. This would
allow the perssure to escape.
Under normal conditions the vacuum and the bolts held everything together.
This fix was only for magnets that were already installed. All new magnets
after that had drop plates.
