We had a similar issue back when I was working at U of Manitoba.  We would
see these spikes even with no RF going into the probe: transmitter cables all
disconnected.  The problem resolved when if we switched from lab air to dry
nitrogen for spinning, or added the dryer on the compressed air.  Our
hypothesis was that the expansion in the drive jets was cooling the air sufficiently
to form ice crystals, which would then create static electricity and discharges.

I believe a similar thing can happen to aircraft flying through ice clouds.
