We switched all of our Bruker systems to Windows after CentOS was unsupported.
Like most have already indicated, we too used linux to maintain control of our
computers and avoid having IT prioritize their needs on our systems.
However, we had a lot of issues with linux, maintaining it, and getting some software
to work (primarily remote desktop apps.
We purchased a new Bruker 500 about 4 years ago and it shipped with Windows.
We noticed that it runs fairly well, and Icon/Automation seemed to work better under Windows.
Since then, we've switched our other systems to Windows as well, mainly because
Bruker doesn't seem to officially support the more popular distros that have long term
support (Ubuntu LTS, etc). Windows will be around long term, but its hard to
have the same faith for Alma linux. 3 years into the transition, we don't
have a lot of complaints about the switch. We did have a conversation with our IT
team about how the instrument should be managed and operated. They have
disabled all auto-updates, etc that can interrupt experiments, and provided us admin accounts.
