In my experience, there are two (main) reasons for "DOWNWARDS MOTION FAILED".
1) The arm goes almost all the way down but it displays this message. Then
it doesn't trigger any contact and the emails from Ulrich and Tim describe
very well what needs to be done.
2) The arm stops halfway between up and down. Then (in my experience) that
round, brown ring in the middle of the arm, hidden in the cuboid (see picture),
is leaking (presumably due to 30 years of wear and tear) and the two chambers
for the pneumatics that run the arm down (or above) are no longer separated.
I'm also trying to find a solution to this problem with our workshop, but so
far I haven't been able to solve it. (see Gopal's email).

Our BACs autosampler (on a Bruker AV400) is producing a "DOWNWARDS MOTION FAILED"
error, which disrupts the queue in ICON (and leaves the lift air on, sometimes
all night!). The advice I was given by Bruker was to clean the arm. It is not
100% clear to me what specifically needs to be cleaned. In addition, we are
getting this error more and more frequently and I'm having to clean the arm
more and more often. It is not clear that it is really that dirty!
My method is to take special care to remove the arm, remove the bolts with
an allen wrench and wipe the piston thoroughly with chemwipes and methanol.
I also use q-tips and methanol to swab the o-rings, etc. I'm wondering if
anyone has any more specific advice on how to stop (or at least decrease
the frequency of) these DOWNWARD MOTION FAILED errors.
