I presume that you will be setting up a standard solution NMR
instrument, and that you are not also trying to do MAS.
For solution NMR, the supply pressure will become much more important
when you are using automated sample changers. You should have no
trouble acquiring data with lower supply pressure, but ejecting samples
and running the other pneumatic components will demand higher pressure.
I would not want to operate the spectrometers when the supply pressure
is between 75 - 80 PSI. The margin just seems too tight.
Most of our spectrometers are supplied with dry nitrogen gas at about
100-120 PSI. There is a regulator inside the console that steps this
supply gas down to about 5.5 bar (or about 80 PSI). This works quite
well.
We have one spectrometer that is supplied by dry air from its own
compressor (the building air in that lab is only about 40 PSI and is
unreliable). The air compressor is connected to a large external
ballast tank to help isolate the spectrometer when the compressor cycles
on and off. The compressor turns on when the ballast tank pressure
drops below 95 PSI, and turns off when the pressure reaches 120 PSI.
This air then passes through a series of filters to eliminate oil and
particulates, and then is regulated down to 90 PSI before passing
through a dryer. This setup has worked extremely well for about four years.
I would have liked to site the compressor in another room, and I also
would have liked to double the size of the ballast tank. But space is
not cheap.
Is there any chance you can have your facilities bump up the supply
pressure to about 90-100 PSI? That would be the best solution.
