Re: [AMMRL] BACs downwards motion failed

Dear Olga

We acquired the blue conductive rubber tape/tube from Bruker UK many years
ago- I’m not sure where else it can be sourced. Bruker may still have stocks?
It is replaced simply by detaching from the track it sits in, cutting a new
piece to the same length (or alternatively cleaning the existing rubber) and
then pushing this back into place.

Best regards

Dear Tim,

We also often experience BACS motion failure here in Dundee. I appreciate very
much your advice on cleaning internal contacts and replacing impregnated rubber
ring. I have a broken BACS piston which I can use to play around with the
conductive rubber ring. Could you please share which blue rubber tubing fits
your BACS and how do you replace it if it is not too big ask please?

Many thanks,
Olga

As described in Ulrich’s mail- this problem is (nearly) always associated
with dirt on the contacts within the rectangular piston block- cleaning the
piston arm itself is unlikely to resolve the issue. If the 4 allen bolts are
remove from the end of the block it is possible to access and clean the internal
contacts as described. These touch on a (blue) rubberised ring that is
conductive (impregnated) and when compressed (by the upward or downward motion
of the piston) will complete the contact that indicates the motion is complete.
Dirt on the contacts and/or the rubberised ring can lead to the upward/downward
motion failed error. We used to keep a spool of the blue rubber tubing so we
could replace this periodically to resolve these issues, in addition to cleaning.
Too much grease on the piston can also cause grease to accumulate on the rubber
which can exacerbate the problem, so go easy on the piston grease.

Good luck.

The little pots of grease are labelled "Horiz-Zyl" and "Vertikal-Zyl"

Hi Justin.

In addition to cleaning the arm, are you also greasing it? I recall there are
two kinds of grease for the BACS – one for the piston, and one for the slider
that goes between the autosampler and magnet bore. I forget which one is which,
but I think the little jars of grease may be labeled.

Good luck!

Hello,

Our BACs autosampler (on a Bruker AV400) is producing a "DOWNWARDS MOTION FAILED"
error, which disrupts the queue in ICON (and leaves the lift air on, sometimes
all night!). The advice I was given by Bruker was to clean the arm. It is
not 100% clear to me what specifically needs to be cleaned. In addition, we
are getting this error more and more frequently and I'm having to clean the
arm more and more often. It is not clear that it is really that dirty!

My method is to take special care to remove the arm, remove the bolts with
an allen wrench and wipe the piston thoroughly with chemwipes and methanol.
I also use q-tips and methanol to swab the o-rings, etc. I'm wondering if
anyone has any more specific advice on how to stop (or at least decrease
the frequency of) these DOWNWARD MOTION FAILED errors.

Thanks

Justin
