Hi Ken,

A 2D approach would probably work better for most characterization questions.
But if it had to be a 1D, I've two ideas for those interested in tinkering
with it.

  1.
Treat it like an incomplete decoupling problem, only apply the reverse strategy,
where making things worse becomes the goal. Lower decoupler power and/or move
the offset away from peaks of interest. Would work better the further apart
the signals are, though it won't be any help for targeting signals in the
middle of each other.
  2.
Have you ever used PROHOMODEC? It does a decent job with selective decoupling.
Reconfiguring the decoupler nuclei to P31 instead might work. The trick would
be narrowing the excitation range by changing pw and plw. I'd try updating the
prosol table with a much lower power calibration and see how it behaved, being
careful to stay within probe specs. If successful, it would let you choose any
signal to center the decoupler on, and I'm curious much selective it would be.

Kind regards,
Luke

Ken,

Not with selectively decoupling a particular 31P nucleus specifically, but
in my experience a 1H-31P HMBC works VERY well. I sometimes observe couplings
up to 5 bonds distant.
