Hi Zachariah,

Interesting that you think that manual insertion is safer than automatic,
I tend to think the opposite. One problem I have experienced over the years
is users putting a sample into the magnet when one is already in there, and
then panicking when they realise what they have done and then hitting eject
with the obvious consequence. I guess your users of radioactive samples are
especially and rigorously trained.

Dear Ken,

We have users that daily measure radioactive samples (primarily U and Th
containing samples) at our instrumentation facility. To help with the fear
that regular users have with other users analyzing radioactive samples in
the same instrument facility we have strict operating procedures for the
analysis of radioactive samples (special designated locations and spinners
for radioactive samples, only manual sample insertion, double containment
of samples, post-analysis swipes and surveys, etc.). You can see our operating

Users that analyze radioactive NMR samples are required to place their samples
in a PTFE NMR tube liner (Wilmad Item #6005), sealed with a PTFE plug and placed
in a 5 mm NMR tube. The PTFE liner is very good containment if the glass NMR
tube breaks to prevent contamination of an area or an instrument.

Hi Everyone,

I've had a request to perform 1H and 13C NMR on Uranium (VI) containing complexes.
The question is if it is safe or a hazard to the instrument. I've been provided
papers where it is done in relatively standard NMR setups, and no mention is made
of the fact that Uranium is present in the experimental NMR section.

Does anyone have experience with this?
