Hi Ken,
Something like VNC would probably work fine as a one size fits all solution
if you just want them to be able to see what is in the queue.
I will say that in Icon at least you don't need to have any particularly
special setup on student's laptops since it can be remotely accessed
through a web browser. I can't speak to what it takes to do that for Varian
or JEOL instruments.
