Hi Nelson,

An alternative to locking out the windows button would be removing the ability
of the icon-running identity to install programs. Depending on what version of
Windows you have installed there are a couple of methods for this ranging from
just creating a local "standard" account or even editing the registry to block
msi execution. As far as security goes this should be adequate to prevent anyone
from accidentally installing anything malicious -- intentional malice is not
really a solvable problem when the users have physical access to the computer.

I do not believe that being on a domain will directly interfere with ICON running
the spectrometer. However, IT administrative choices are frequently incompatible
with efficient spectrometer operation, e.g. IT will push an OS update at 3 AM
Saturday, a perfectly rational time to do this for office workers but not an
ideal one when multiple longer experiments have been enqueued for the weekend.
Check to see if IT can give you some flexibility on when to reboot following an
update push (this can be done and is for most of our laboratory equipment). You
will want to run ICON through a generic or local userid and IT organizations
sometimes have unworkable policies with regard to these. I have never been in a
situation where domaining the control PC offered enough of an advantage to justify
the inconvenience, but if access to shared drives, backup, etc. are dependent on
domaining, or you're not being given a choice, it should be possible to make it work.

Say hey to Drew for me.

Sparky
