Hi Anne,
the green box should normally be relatively easy to repair - it's a (shockingly
simply built out of only one single diode and two electrolytic capacitors…)
rectifier, typically the capacitors inside overheat and blow up. Replace the caps,
maybe re-solder all connections (I had one which essentially unsoldered itself)
and it should normally work again.
