Re: [AMMRL] Topshim question - both out of necessity and curiosity...

Hi Rajan,

I believe it's already been noted in this thread, but tuneb no longer does
anything.  I emailed the developers a while ago and was informed that
they didn't have any data indicating that topshim tuneb improved things so
it's been depreciated.  They did say that if somebody had a case where
tuneb did make a significant difference they'd be happy to have a look.
I just checked all the way back to topspin 3.2 and I don't see any indication
that tuneb or tunea would turn the spinning off before attempting to optimize
the off-axis shims.  I personally remember always having to make sure the
spinning was turned off before I used either of these options.  Because
if I used it with spinning on, it wouldn't do any good.  So I would claim
that it's not a bug, that's just how the argument works and that's how it's
been for a while.  But that is based purely on personal experience and
not any hard data.

Cheers,Mike

Dear Spinners

I think I did not make the rationale of my question clearer.

The reason I compared the AV-II/Topspin 3.2  system with the modern NEO
system for the same operation is this.

The older system,  turns off rotation before attempting transverse shimming.
Stating what we all know,  without this step, changing the XY plane shim
currents doesn't register anything observable either on the LOCK or the FID area.

My point is that,  perhaps,  in the newer hardware/software combination,
this step is missing i.e. could be a bug of sorts.   Turning off the rotation
as a necessary step before transverse shimming, is what I wanted to highlight.

I wanted to see if this is a universal behavior for the NEO systems, if one were
to claim this to be a bug.  If not, I will have to look if this is something
that is troubling only my NEO console.

Speaking of sample rotation, in very old systems like the D series (and in AV-I
driven by TS2.1 also),  when we attempt 'wobb' while the sample is rotating,
the wobb curve dances around due to modulation from the spinning.  One has
to turn off rotation manually before tuning the probe.     If I am not
mistaken,  TS3.X onwards,  the rotation is automatically turned OFF when
wobb or atma  is started and the rotation resumes once these routines are complete.

Thank you

Rajan
