I don’t think I can answer your question, but I can tell you about
my own experience that might provide you with some clues.
We have a HASKRIS system which provides chilled water to one of our cryoprobes.
There are many different styles and types of Haskris chillers.
In our case, the Haskris provides a closed loop of chilled water (I’ll
call it Haskris water) to the helium compressor. The Haskris water is cooled
by heat exchange from a supply of campus chilled water. Other models of Haskris
chillers have their own refrigeration system to cool the HASKRIS water.
Our HASKRIS is NOT protected by UPS, but it is on emergency power.
If the HASKRIS looses power for more than a few seconds, the system will
automatically switch to city water to supply water to the helium compressor
of the cryoprobe, and the HASKRIS is effectively bypassed. The cryoprobe
may stop briefly until the emergency power comes on, but since it still senses
sufficient cooling water supply, and the working temperature of the system
hasn’t had time to change much, the compressor powers up again and
the cryoprobe remains cold. From an operational perspective, the NMR
experiments continue to run and the data look fine.
In practice, we have not had an issue with the power to the HASKRIS, but we
have had issues with the building chilled water supply. We have a filter
upstream in the chilled water line, and when that filter becomes plugged, the
flow of chilled water is reduced. When the flow of building chilled water
is insufficient to cool the HASKRIS water, then the system switches
automatically to city water to supply the helium compressor.
So, why does your system warmup?
I have a few thoughts:
1. Perhaps you don’t have city water backup? So, when the
circulating pumps in the HASKRIS turn off, the helium compressor senses a
temperature spike and automatically powers down and begins passive warmup.
2. If your HASKRIS is supplied by building chilled water like mine,
maybe there is a problem with the building chilled water which triggers your
warmup. Is the building chilled water on emergency power?
3. Perhaps your UPS is not setup properly.
a. Ideally your UPS should be “double-conversion” which
effectively means that you are always delivering power from the batteries.
Plugging the UPS to utility power simply serves to keep the batteries fully
charged. Most UPSs above 2kVA are double conversion.
b. What is the rated capacity of your UPS? The HASKRIS has pumps, and
may have a refrigerator. The electrical draw from pumps and refrigerators
spike well above normal operating power. If you UPS lacks sufficient “head space”
to handle the spike in the electrical draw, the UPS will simply fail, and your
cryoprobe warms up. I think if your UPS is normally at 50% or lower, you are
probably okay.
c. Is your UPS “online” or in bypass mode? If it is
in bypass mode, then it is like the UPS isn’t even there (perhaps it
might still do some power conditioning, but it does not offer any protection).
Some UPSs use a manual switch to go into bypass mode, others do so through
software (or LCD display), or both. Check this.

Hello all--just wondering if anyone has a Haskris unit (ours is model R300
I believe) on a UPS to ensure a smooth transition to emergency power. While
all of our individual UPS units do exactly what they are supposed to do when
a power switch occurs, the Haskris on our 500 MHz Bruker NEO system continues
to shut off and cause the system to warm up (during the ~10 seconds it takes
for the generator power to kick in), even though it is equipped with its own
UPS. I suspect we may have overlooked something fundamental with the setup,
and was hoping someone with a similar setup would have some insights on how
to rectify the issue. If you are able to share the specs of your own Haskris/UPS
combo, that would also be extremely helpful.
