1. We're using OVJ on three of our SSNMR systems, and we are contributing
to OVJ development, particularly with respect to SSNMR.
2. We are currently using Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. We have not explicitly tried
others, but our long-term plan is to move to Alma9, to have the same OS as
our Bruker systems. Dan Iverson has either already tested OVJ on Alma9 or
is planning to. We intend to migrate sometime later this year.
3. I haven't tried running a spectrometer on WSL and frankly don't care
to try. OVJ heavily leverages user accounts to function and I wouldn't want
to set that up in WSL. I'd also have concerns about the multiple network
adapter setup and overall stability. In general, I'm loath to run an
acquisition system in a VM.
4. We currently use a single login, which has pros and cons; we're trying
to move to multiple accounts, and the issues we have there are not with OVJ
itself. OVJ has integral support for multiple accounts and (in principle)
those accounts could be bound to Active Directory or some other IT-compliant
user management system.
As Gregory notes there can be some minor issues with installation and migration.
We're currently cleaning up a SOP for installation/new account creation which
I could share next week.

We have been required by the powers that be to upgrade the computer that is
currently tied to our MR400 system ca 2010. It is currently running some
flavor of RedHat Linux and VNMRJ 3.2 Rev A.
I am reading a little bit about OpenVNMRJ and just wanted to ask some general
questions about the upgrade. This system would be primarily walk-up 1H, 13C,
19F 1D NMR. We wouldn't be implementing new pulse sequences. We don't have
an autosampler.
1. Are you using VNMRJ or OpenVNMRJ?
2. What operating system have you found to be stable and reliable?
3. OpenVNMRJ can run on windows but using "Windows Subsystem for Linux." I
have zero experience with this. Is it a viable option for an acquisition
system or is it unstable? (IT services would prefer we use windows but I
don't want to acquiesce if it's a bad idea)
4. Currently each user has a login, which is how we track usage. Are you
using multiple logins or do you have another mechanism for tracking?

Hi Sarah,
As the creator of the Windows WSL install script, I should make it clear that
the WSL installation is for data station use only. WSL doesn=E2=80=99t have
the full, stable, backend support for interfacing with a spectrometer.
You can install Linux in a virtual machine and use that if you need to use
Windows as the base OS. I would use HyperV for this over VirtualBox. But like
Alex, I wouldn=E2=80=99t recommend that setup for a production system as you
would now be managing two operating systems and the stability of the VM setup.
At my previous university position, we were using OpenVnmrJ on RedHat 8 with
Mercury, Inova, NMRS, and DDR2 systems. All users were operators under one
Linux walkup account. Operator authentication was linked to the campus Active
Directory and usage was tracked with the OVJ accounting software. I would
recommend using Alma Linux 9 instead of RedHat with a developer account so
you don=E2=80=99t have to worry about renewing your subscription each year
for system updates.
