Hi all
I’d like to report back on the problems we had on a NEO 400 MHz
spectrometer running ICON with a 60 position SampleXpress and a Prodigy probe.
Problems began when a student tried to change acquisition parameters for a
P31CPD experiment in ICONNMR. The software did not permit the change and
threw an error- the details remain forgotten. In an attempt to remove any
conflicts, the student closed programs/windows (yes, we are running in a
Windows environment 😊 ) and inadvertently closed the Topspin control
window. After restarting Topspin 4.1.3, the ICONNMR run stopped and
communication to the console was lost. Power cycling via the PDUDISP did
not finish successfully. When I arrived, the BSMS did not have power and TopSpin
opened in data processing mode only and ‘cf’ failed.
The solution:
With the help of Mike at Bruker support/Rover, we were able to bring the
system back- thank you Mike! As per bug fix #SKB-319 “Bad super
block on SCU (blade)” the following commands were run on the console:
Fsck -c -p /dev/sda2 This generated some errors
Fsck -y /dev/sda2 after some output, it appeared to complete without errors.
It appears the OS installation on the console was corrupted, files lost and
write permissions revoked. Copying files directly to the console didn’t
work nor did loading data from a previous nmrsave.
After a power cycle on the PC and console, Topspin 4.0.6 actually opened
correctly- had to use an older version. Opening TS4.1.3 then worked after acf,
firmware update and a PC reboot to get the BSMS working again.
Thank you to Clemens and Courtney Reichhardt for suggestions and to Normand
Cyr for suggestions on manually starting the power distribution unit. At
one point I thought the problem was there or in the power supply on the BSMS.
Students are now happily submitting samples again.
Marc
Original request:
Looking for pointers on restarting a NEO spectrometer. Specifically, the BSMS
does not turn on. During the boot up, the PDU hangs on connecting to the
restartserver and after 20 minutes or so, the PDU indicates the spectrometer
is on but not booted. BSMS LEDs are off. Connections are secure, ethernet
cables have been reset, entire console has been power cycled and ‘cf’
fails. This appears to have been the result of a student attempting to change
an acquisition parameter in Icon, seeing an error and decided to close extra
windows (we’re running on a PC/Windows box). Unfortunately, the command
window for Topspin 4.1.3 was also closed.
My work day may differ from your work day. Please do not feel obligated to
respond outside your working hours.
