Overview The
College of Chemistry’s NMR Facility is a 24/7 research facility for the use
of faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and some
well-supervised undergraduate researchers. The NMR Specialist provides
engineering and maintenance services and technical support to all users of
the NMR facility. The incumbent is responsible for the effective operation
of the facility, ensuring that the laboratory’s instrumentation, computers,
electronic equipment, and engineering stations are maintained in
state-of-the-art condition. The NMR Specialist reports to the Director of
the NMR Facility, who, together with the Director of the Analytical
Facilities and NMR faculty advisory committee, is responsible for long-term
planning and oversight of the NMR facility. The NMR Specialist is expected
to train customers on NMR experimental methods needed to meet the needs of
the premier research scientists in the College. Responsibilities The
incumbent is responsible for the following:

1. He/She shall be responsible for facility maintenance including all the
magnets’ cryogen fills (Helium and Nitrogen), computer support, and
maintaining facility safety standards. The incumbent will ensure that the
magnets’s liquid nitrogen and liquid helium fills are performed in a timely
and safe manner.

2. The incumbent will provide NMR training to new students and postdoctoral
researchers, taking into consideration their varying needs and diverse
research efforts. He/She will provide instruction and training to new users
of the instruments, and evaluate users’ capability to use the instruments.
The incumbent will be responsible for conducting checkout tests, variable
temperature NMR training, and group operator training.

3. The incumbent will provide sample services to campus and outside
entities as requested. This will include routine solution-state and
solid-state NMR sample services.

4. He/she shall maintain acquisition and processing software, including
writing custom software necessary for effective usage of the equipment.
Incumbent is responsible for installation, modification, and testing of
NMR-related software and hardware and for carefully documenting new
software created for the facility. Incumbent is responsible for creating
backup drives for each computer workstations. He/she assists customers in
connecting their own workstations for data transfer and off-line
processing. Incumbent is also responsible for maintaining the facility
websites.

5. Incumbent will assist with developing and maintaining a reliable
preventive maintenance program for the NMR instruments. A concurrent
responsibility is the ordering of appropriate electronic, computer and
consumable components. He/she will also coordinate efforts with
individuals or vendors to arrange for repairs to equipment if such repairs
cannot be accomplished in-house.

6. The incumbent will assist in performing minor repairs to the NMR
instruments, and will help troubleshoot common instrument problems. The
incumbent is expected to come in on some nights and weekends for
troubleshooting and repair as needed. He/She will assist in preparation of
instrument grant when necessary. Required Qualifications B.S. or M.S.
degree in the Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences or equivalent
experience; Experience in using solution-state NMR, and preferably
solid-state NMR; Fast learner; Excellent written and oral communication
skills; Excellent mechanical aptitude and computer skills.

It is desirable for the candidate to have proficiency with UNIX operating
systems, including basic system administration, and website html
proficiency. Salary & Benefits Salary range budgeted for this position
is $45,000 - $50,000 (depending on experience, internal equity, etc.), plus
benefits.
