Re: [AMMRL] Any brave intrepid explorers installed Topspin 5.0 yet?

Hi folks,

Got 5.0.0 working on our Neo on Windows 11 eventually. Predictably I did
something similar to Ken during installation and got caught out by the
passwords for nmradministrator - initial passwords are generated and stored
in plaintext in (Windows 11 at least) C:\Bruker\Credentials_YYYY_MM_DD.txt.
For those on the fence, its not that different to 4.5.0 really.

I'm seeing some weird text rendering issues on Windows 11 to the point that
the standard text editor (edau etc.) is unusable. We're on standard font
sizes and 100% scaling in Windows, so really not sure what's going on there.
I have a vague memory about there being a text file to change to fix this,
but I had a look through my notes and previous release letters and couldn't
find anything. Maybe someone can remember better than me?

"New" apbk was supposed to stop integrating spectra by default, but
unfortunately still is, and also now ignores -n so you can't even turn it
off anymore. Which is shame, because of the lot of the new options look
really useful.

For figuring out the new components in TS 5, the manuals for IAM and SpinPilot
are pretty reasonable starting points.

Whether to switch SpinPilot is another matter entirely though. There are
currently no tools for migrating IconNMR configurations into SpinPilot, so
if you have lots of users, solvents and parameter sets, this is not going to
be a fun experience at all. At least to my eyes it isn't feature complete
with IconNMR - from the manual: "The initial version of SpinPilot does not
yet include the full range of NMR automation functions.".

Given IconNMR will continue to exist, and many of us will be supporting
instruments stuck on IconNMR for perpetuity, I'm not sure its worth the pain
of migrating just yet, not to mention the additional training to keep users
happy on both systems. If we only had Neo's the calculus would be a little
different, but not sure how many labs are that fortunate.

Is anyone aware of timelines for IconNMR deprecation and/or SpinPilot

feature addition?

Thanks

Geoff

Hi Sameer,

I got it working. There are some prompts and messages during the install that
are very boring (I'm blaming them for the fact that I didn't read them carefully
enough) that I should have paid more attention to.

Once I figured that out, I was in. And it imported all of my previous settings,
especially all of my users and custom ICON settings seamlessly. It's working
great. Frankly it went more smoothly that most of the updates I've done over
the past 15 years - and I've done every one of them. I'm glutton for punishment.

Setting up SpinPilot will take more time, but if you just want to update to 5.0
and keep using ICON, it's really rather painless.
