Dear Perry,
I found an SOP published at the Free University of Berlin (Germany):
https://www.bcp.fu-berlin.de/chemie/chemie/forschung/InorgChem/agspandl/Ressourcen/Betriebsanweisungen-Chemikalien-Praktikum/Betriebsanweisung-Dichlormethan.pdf
Hazardous Substance Identification
Dichloromethane, CH₂Cl₂
as a solvent for analytical and preparative purposes
GHS Health hazard symbol (torso with “star”)
GHS Warning symbol (exclamation mark)
Signal word: Danger
* H315: Causes skin irritation.
* H319: Causes serious eye irritation.
* H335: May cause respiratory irritation.
* H336: May cause drowsiness or dizziness.
* H351: Suspected of causing cancer.
* H373: May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure.
Affected organs: Liver, blood, central nervous system

Protective Measures and Rules of Conduct
* Do not inhale vapours.
* Avoid contact with eyes, skin, mucous membranes, and clothing.
* Do not spill.
* Keep container tightly closed.
* Keep away from sources of ignition.
* Work only in a fume hood. Keep the front sash closed.
________________________________
Measures in Case of Danger
* In case of spillage, cordon off the affected area, evacuate all persons
in the room and notify the responsible laboratory manager immediately.
(My comment: For minor spillage, absorbing material is not recommended, just let
the spillage evaporate, milliliters of spillage inside the fume hood do not
require cordoning off and people evacuation)
________________________________
First Aid
* After skin contact: Wash with plenty of water.
* After eye contact: Rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes with eyelids held open.
* After inhalation: Move to fresh air immediately. Seek medical attention.
* After ingestion: Seek medical attention immediately.
* After contact with clothing: Remove contaminated or soaked clothing
(including undergarments) and personal protective equipment immediately.
________________________________
Proper Disposal
* Do not dispose of in sink drain (waste water sewer)
* Dispose of as a halogenated organic solvent in the fume hood (labelled container).
* See operating instruction for waste disposal
The information seems complete and correct and it is in accordance with the=
data offered by GESTIS (
https://www.dguv.de/ifa/gestis/gestis-stoffdatenbank/index-2.jsp )
a database under oversight of the Germany Social Accident Insurance, we use this
regularly for our workplace safety solutions. GESTIS is available in English as well.
As NMR lab manager and work safety counselor of our institute I would add the
following rules of conduct:
* Store in a ventilated closet
* Use protective gloves made from fluorocarbon rubber (FKM). (Do not use
nitrile gloves) (my comment: Only for handling of larger volumes than NMR tube fillings)
* Do not bring in contact with aluminium
* Close filled NMR tubes with PTFE stoppers/ caps
(My comment: PTFE caps effectively stop evaporation over weeks and can be washed and recycled)
I used Chat GPT to translate the text of the SOP into English, to me, the translation
seems correct (my English proficiency is C1/C2, quite good). Naturally you will still
have to edit and format the text according to your institution’s SOP document style.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards
Jan Teipel

> Subject: EXTERN: [AMMRL] SOP for Methlene Chloride NMR Sample prep.
Hello All,
Our Health and Safety lab is requiring us to have a specific SOP for using
deuterated methylene chloride as an NMR solvent. We do not use the solvent
very often and probably can live without it but we have a few dozen grams
and it's fairly expensive. I am hesitant (too cheap) to discard it as
hazardous waste.
I am trying to find a template SOP for using it prepare NMR samples so I can
edit for my need. Every example I can find is for usage at higher volumes.
Does anyone have an SOP for methylene chloride that can help me satisfy
our H&S people?
Thanks,
--
Perry.
