It’s not just the walls but if you have support beams in the room try
to have them designed/laid out so that they are symmetrical around the magnets.
Again less problem with shielded systems.

My advice get involved with the architects. You will be surprised how much
they love learning about this stuff. Many of them may have dealt with MRI
systems and so will have some awareness of the issues.

Hallo,

da war viel richtiges dabei!

Hello - we had our AV III 600 at foor level 4. So we had seen there some nice
artefacts at 6 Hertz. This was the shaking by the building.

Now this system was moved to the cellar - on a concrete plate. Once the cryoshims
are 'updated' - because the location was moved and also the surrounding walls
and bars have changed too.

The other AV 600 was also moved - this was the unshielded one. We put some extra
material into the ceiling before - these sheets of Weicheisen-Metall - keeping
the stray field out of the seminar rooms above. Also this shielding has eaten
only one Ampere. The magnet was shifted 'cold' but the magnetic field was down.
When reestablishing this - the engineer has to put one Amper more into the coil,
to get the resonance back. Then it was once more shimmed by the cryo shims.

This magnet was replaced by a new shielded Ascend 18.8 Tesla magnet. Still
the ceiling was kept in there. Shielding the seminar rooms from the new system.
This was all no problem changing the locations. But you need the experts to do
this properly. We moved 5 magnets and systems from different floors to the
groundplate - now all is save.

Hi Ulli,

I agree that as long as you stay sufficiently far away, you should be fine.
Normally big static things such as structural members aren't as big a problem
as big mobile things like elevators. Even if you can't get to an ideal
solution, usually you can figure out a good enough configuration to make things
work right. And cryoshims can usually be adjusted to compensate for things
like that as well.

Dear Colleagues,

Dalhousie is planning a new building, which will also house the NMR facility.
We just learned that a changed plan is to build the new building using structural
steel (not concrete), and the question was raised, whether this will be a problem
for the NMR operation.

While this may not be ideal, we likely have no choice in this matter, but I
would appreciate any experiences or advice you can give me. (I couldn't find
anything in the archives). The magnets can be moved sufficiently inside the
room so that their 5 Gauss lines can be kept away from the walls. My feeling
is as long as we stay sufficiently far away, we should be fine. Do you agree?

Happy resonating,

Ulli
