Hi Ian,

Over the past few years, we’ve replaced our GE UPS<https://ammrl.groups.io/g/main/message/722 >,
both internal pumps, and one valve. Our BMPC has always been connected directly
to the UPS, with no transfer switch in between. Each time, we had a Bruker engineer
on site and used our spare pump, connected to the port at the top of the magnet, to
keep the magnet pumped during the service.

As for running a BMPC pump from an independent power supply with the rest of
the BMPC off - I suspect a vacuum pump could be powered this way, but I’m unsure
whether the corresponding valve can be controlled with the BMPC powered down.

When we had the GE UPS, we routinely replaced all the batteries by using the rotary
switch at the back to place the unit in bypass. This kept the BMPC powered but
unprotected in case of an outage during the replacement. I believe we even hired
a UPS technician to replace a faulty fan while in bypass, though that was about
eight years ago so I may have remembered incorrectly.

Best,
Sameer

Dear AMMRLers,

We have a Bruker 800 Ultrashield Plus, controlled by a BMPC with an attached
GE LP11-8 UPS. We need to troubleshoot the UPS; we suspect there may be an
internal fan not working and we also need to change the batteries in the main
UPS and battery bank. All the written documents about UPS troubleshooting and
replacing batteries require that the UPS be shut down. This will require us to
power down the BMPC and pumps which we want to avoid at all costs. I'd also
like to avoid hot swapping the batteries without having some pretty clear
precedent for this being the best way to do things.

Does anyone have experience with troubleshooting a UPS powering a BMPC unit
that they can share? I'd be keen to hear whether anyone has run the pumps
from an independent power supply with the BMPC console being switched off.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ian
