Subject: Synthesis-NMR instrument supervision position at IBM Research-Almaden.

Jane, could you please post for me on AMMRL this opening in the Science and Technology function at the IBM Research-Almaden laboratory in San Jose, CA? We are looking for a chemist with strong synthetic organic and (NMR) skills. The two primary responsibilities of this position are (1) to support a variety of projects by synthesizing and characterizing monomers and polymers, and (2) to maintain a multi-user NMR facility which includes an automated multinuclear 400 MHz and a multinuclear 300 MHz NMR spectrometer. This position is in a very active industrial research laboratory in California’s Silicon Valley. The person in this position must have the organizational and interpersonal skills to work with an international group of scientists - often under timeline restriction. Excellent communication skills and the judgment to work within assigned priorities are essential. Synthetic responsibilities include synthesizing and purifying monomers and polymers for research projects that might include photoresists, organic catalysis, low dielectric constant polymer films, magnetic nano-particles, nano-medicine, desalination membranes, magnetic storage methods, and lithium-air batteries. Experience with air-free reactions, standard purification strategies, and polymer forming reactions are preferred. NMR responsibilities include operating the two spectrometers, training users on the automated system, performing routine maintenance (including cryogenic fills), and interacting with users to optimize NMR experiments. The automated 400 NMR changes samples under computer control, with the ability to obtain 1H, 13C, 19F, and 29Si spectra, and is the workhorse of the synthetic users. Users of this facility run their own samples on the 400, so the responsibilities of this position are primarily training of new users, oversight of the operation of the automated system, and providing NMR consulting with about 25 users. The 300 MHz instrument is used for backup of the 400 and for variable temperature and relaxation experiments as well as for collaborative research projects. The successful applicant will have the benefit of working with a collaborative group of synthetic chemists and with a high level of instrumental NMR expertise (electronics and solid state NMR). The person in this position will be involved in collaborative research projects, both basic and applied, with these other scientists. The website for our laboratory is <http://www.almaden.ibm.com> www.almaden.ibm.com and browsers should especially view the section on IBM Research-Almaden. IBM is one of the few industrial laboratories that still supports basic research. It is assumed that the candidate will have a Ph.D. degree but highly skilled candidates with masters degrees will also be considered. Applications from women and from members of underepresented groups are especially invited. Candidates should send resumes which include education, experience (synthesis and NMR), publications, personal goals (1 page), and the names of three references who can attest to their skills to cwade_at_us.ibm.com.
