Re: [AMMRL] Safety requirements in NMR labs

Hi Heike,

Thanks for starting this great discussion!

I have been fighting a battle with safety in the department as well. I am not
a fan of lab coats, but have the issue that there is also a direct infusion
Orbitrap and MALDI MS in the same room as the NMR. Does anyone have advice
on how to handle this combination?

Thanks,

Gary,

I like the "shirt sleeve" requirement. Not sure I could enforce this here with
the students but that seems like a good way to take care of the lab coat issues...
Thanks for the info!

Hi All

Very much the same here from the other side of the pond. These are our local
expectations

1. The lab is a shirt sleeves environment unless you are working at the wet
bench or doing something hazardous [ie running our flow system or doing a
fill, then you need the required pie and should use a lab coat from the
facillity]
2. Bring your samples pre prepared
3. Make sure you hands are clean before you handle samples or spinners [to
keep junk out of the probe]
4. You can only eat and drink in the office not the nmr hall

Hi Heike,

If I had full dictatorial power, I'd be doing a lot of what Josh suggests.
Unfortunately, you know my situation.
The hills I'm dying on here are gloves and closed-toe shoes, which are the
two issues that actually have actually cropped up here.
- No gloves in the facility outside of the wet lab, unless you're cleaning
up a spill; in that case, you should be focused on the spill, not the computer.
- Closed-toe shoes everywhere inside the facility. I didn't think this would be a fight, and yet...

I strongly second Josh's prohibition on outside lab coats.
We don't require routine use of safety glasses, and I don't think there's a
compelling need for them unless you're in proximity to a cryogen fill, doing
SSNMR probe spinning diagnostics outside the magnet, or cleaning up the
aforementioned spill.
That said, I don't see any issue with someone wearing their own safety glasses
in the NMR space, I'm just not going to require it.

Josh, if you see this I'd be interested in your separate thread on safety signage,
we're in the process of updating ours.

Cheers,
Alex
