I would like to second Josh Kurutz's policy statement. It is pretty
thorough. The lab at Boise State operates in a very similar way with a few
exceptions.
-We do not have a policy about wearing lab coats in the lab but it does
make sense to prohibit them since I am sure that many have contamination,
particularly on their sleeves.
-We do not allow users to wear gloves from outside of the NMR lab. We do
supply gloves within the NMR lab if a student prefers to use them, but I
make it clear to the students that the outside of the tubes should be
clean, free of dust, finger oil, and other chemicals.
-We require that the student use a tube carrier to transport the NMR
samples from their lab to the NMR facility. We have cheap clear plastic
tubes (and caps) in 4 foot lengths which we cut into 10 inch pieces for
them to use. The plastic degrades in the synthetic lab over time so I keep
an eye on them and tell them to ask for a new one when the old one gets
crazed or brittle.
-We do not have any prep space so on a very limited basis we have allowed
the use of reaction initiators in the NMR lab on a case by case basis but
they must bring in a limited quantity of initiator in a seal bottle with a
septum cap and inject the initiator into the screw top tube with a septum
cap and work within a small bin that they bring with them to the lab.
- no safety glasses are required unless they are doing significant
Variable Temperature work.
On a side issue we have sample changers and therefore have extra spinners
(I refer to them as shuttles with the students since we never spin) and I
teach users to never touch the shuttles (as per Bruker's recommendation) so
the gloves provided in the lab are handy for that purpose too.
