 Dear colleagues,

The director of our NMR-3 facility, Prof. Josef Zwanziger, has publicly
posted a script to check remotely for on-campus power outages. Please see
his e-mail for details and contact him directly for questions.

Happy resonating,
Ulli

Josef Zwanziger says:
"I've written a small app to help with the task of remote site checking for
power outages. In the stormy climate we live in, power outages are
unfortunately not uncommon, and we need to be informed quickly when they
happen in the NMR lab, regardless of where we are. We use UPS's where we
can, but that doesn't include our helium recovery system. For all the
systems, but particularly the helium recovery, we need to be informed
immediately of outages. The app I've written is meant to be run from a
computer away from the lab (say at home), and regularly checks a list of
lab and office computers for connectivity. When one or more of them go
off-line, typically due to a power failure, it gives both a visual update
on the computer it's being run from, but more importantly, generates a
message to our lab Slack channel, which we receive on our phones regardless
of where we are.

The program, called "whosup.py" is written in python and is GPL 3 licensed,
so totally customizable. It gets its initialization data from a file the
user supplies in YAML format (template provided). The user would have to
create or have his/her own Slack channel, and generate a Slack web hook
there for automated access. The program is available from github in my
repositories (for example, use git clone
https://github.com/jzwanzig/whosup.git). Hope you enjoy it and feel free to
ask questions,

Josef Zwanziger
