In good old days, the 'spect' and 'ASP_ST2' definitions used to be
mandatory in /etc/hosts. When the 'eth0' and 'eth1' mappings were strictly
followed to satisfy 'flexlm', (eth0 facing the world and eth1 within the
spectrometer network), when the hostname was sometimes tied to 127.0.0.1
(linux level quirk), it used to cause some issues. Nowadays the name
resolution and IPv4 mapping has become more complex.
In my NEO system, I do not see any such definition. This is most
probably due to two facts. One is that the IPv4 addresses of the
spectrometer network are now controlled by DHCP from the NEO console rather
than the PC box. Second, for NEO systems, we no longer have the
'diskless' download of the OS image onto the rather barebone computer (ccu,
IPSO a bit better) in the console via NFS. They have (thankfully)
rethought the whole paradigm and there is a beefed up Linux system with, I
think, 1 TB disk in the console. The bootstrap program of that system
doesn't rely on our Linux/Windows host anymore to come up and poll all the
console electronics, etc.
If you notice, the /opt/topspin/conf/instr has 'remote_spect' rather than
'spect' for NEO onwards. In my console, the magic happens in a single
board 'SCU', as far as I could see. The data dump is in the reverse
direction i.e. the console pushes data onto the computer rather than the
controlling PC pulling it onto local disk (via the wr #0 type pulse program
statements). Of course, if it's data 'pull' or 'push' is a bit academic.
But, this standalone system that is in NEO console allows us to take some
nifty steps such as restarting the console electronics 'remotely' from
within Topspin (gone are the days of pushing the Red button on CCU or IPSO
i.e. you have to physically get to the lab on a Sunday afternoon, when
something is hanging).
I also will note that, when we upgrade the version of TS, the 'reboot' and
upload of the necessary server components (onto the console electronics)
now happens during the installation itself. Cool upgrade !
