My first instinct if you're getting an overheating message is to check the
fans in the BSMS--if you tape a small piece of paper on a long stick you can
poke it in from behind and use it to check that individual fans are blowing.
Alternatively if you've got a long cable tie you can gently push it into the
slots over each fan and see if the fan hits the cable tie.
Either way, that's the first thing I would probably check.
And that vintage BSMS has a voltage selector--I would probably check the voltage
coming into the console and make sure the selector is set appropriately.
If it needs to be changed make sure to power off the rack before changing the
selector, and be gentle--these switches have been known to disintegrate.
Also, if he's getting overheating messages from the probe he should check that
the VT gasflow through the probe is correct and it's not leaking out somewhere.
If there's no gasflow the heater turns on and if the sample doesn't heat up, the
heater power just increases until the heater overheats and then it shuts down.
Also if there's no gasflow across the heater there's nothing to cool it off so it's
more likely to overheat.

Hi,
recently a friend had a nice challenge.
His equipment
- Avance III console
- BSMS/2
- B-VT 3200 as part of the BSMS/2
Since a few days he get's an overheating message. Switching cable and heater doesn't help,
neither switching the whole B-VT3200 rack.
Maybe the extra 48V power supply next to the B-VT 3200 at the rear side of the BSMS/2
might be the reason. An indication is an additional - non disturbing - error message about
a failing nitrogen evaporator.
Of course that friend could change the power supply on Monday. Nevert=
heless I am very curious.
Did you ever hear about the combination failing 48V power supply - "overheating" message in the past?
Greetings
Rainer
