Re: [AMMRL] "advertising" NMR access to external users

Hi Tom (and others),

We try to advertise pretty aggressively, both for projects that require staff
support and for projects where someone just needs access to an instrument that
they don't have locally. We reach out to local groups and collaborators, advertise
at conferences, and our latest effort is part of the Network for Advanced NMR (NAN),
where we're featured on the NAN Resource Connector (found at the link below).
Findability is a major challenge, which is part of the motivation of the Resource
Connector. In the long run we hope to add more interested facilities to the Resource
Connector, particularly if they have a unique capability that they'd like to highlight
(for example, we're very proud of the 13C sensitivity of our Blackfox SSNMR probe at
1.1 GHz). It's intended not only for national centers, but also regional and local
centers as well.

For what it's worth, I've had the most success with user advertising at conferences
and meetings, including national, regional, and local. National and regional have
been best for finding experienced users who just need access, and local has been
best for finding users who don't know that they could benefit from NMR. That latter
group is often the hardest to reach because they run in different circles. We try
to attend all of our local "research core" meetings, not only to directly meet users,
but also so that our colleagues in other campus research cores know that we exist.

I don't mean to make this an advertisement for NAN, but if anyone is at all interested
in the Resource Connector, please do reach out.

Best,
Alex

I am not sure if I have seen this asked here before, and it is a bit of a tricky
question: at the University here there is some desire to make sure the community
knows the NMR instrument is available for use (for a fee) if desired. In the
past my experience has been that if someone wanted to use your instrument, they
knew how to contact you and no "advertising" was needed. However, we live in an
area where the number of obvious NMR users is very limited. Given that, we do
want to make sure that - if there are any potential users out there - they know
how to contact us.

Had anyone out there had to do "outreach" like this?

I am well aware of the pitfalls of allowing external users on NMR instrumens.

As always, I appreciate any and all advice received!
