Company/ Institute: Northwestern University
Department: Chemistry
Location: Evanston, Ill
Job Title: Senior Scientist, Nuclear Magnetic Spectroscopy

Description: The Department of Chemistry is rapidly expanding the
analytical capabilities in the Integrated Molecular Structure Education and
Research Center (IMSERC) that will culminate in the opening of a new 10,000
sq. ft. facility in 2011 and the addition of three new Senior Scientist
positions. The facility houses the department's NMR, mass spectrometry,
single crystal X-ray and trace metals analysis capabilities. The IMSERC is
an open access research center where users have 24x7 access to capital
intensive characterization techniques and expert scientists are available to
train users on proper selection of techniques and perform advanced
characterization of synthetic materials. The IMSERC currently operates a
400 MHz solid state, 2 400 MHz, and 2 500 MHz Varian instruments. The
facility will be installing a 600 MHz Bruker Avance III and 500 MHz Avance
III console and cryoprobe in the next several months. The new facility will
be designed to house up to 8 spectrometers with a maximum 900 MHz
instrument. The IMSERC is seeking candidates with a record of teaching,
laboratory management and performing advanced experiments using NMR
spectroscopy. Familiarity with Bruker instrumentation is preferred to
compliment the current staff's expertise. Duties include sample analysis,
maintenance and repair of equipment, consultation on method choice,
assistance with data interpretation, and user training. In addition, the
successful application will assist the Director with the identification of
needed additional equipment and the preparation of grant proposals to obtain
such equipment. More information about the IMSERC is available at
http://www.chem.northwestern.edu/news/item?id=1981. The successful
candidate will have a Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field and >5 years
post graduate NMR spectroscopy experience and an extensive publication
record. A past history of lab management and/or graduate level teaching
experience is strongly preferred. Scientists with industrial backgrounds
are encouraged to apply. Salary is commensurate with experience level.
