Following up on Dave Scott's post, I am very happy with the SMC
"Barricade" 7004 router. It costs a few bucks more than the Linksys and
D-Link products but it has more features and it also has, FWIW, a built in
printer port. I think the combination of a firewall, to close everything
except those specific ports you want open, and wrappers, to specify who
can get in to the remaining ports, is the way to go IF you have to have
your spectrometers on a public network. But life is so much easier if you
don't--in that case, you don't even need passwords on user accounts.
