CDRW for UltraSparc 10/Solaris 7

Colleagues:
    Has anyone used the external SCSI port on the dual SCSI/ethernet PCI
card to attached an external CDRW drive? I have a user willing to
purchase such a drive, but I haven't really attempted such a task. I
found someone's directions that include installing scg and cdrecord,
which seem reasonable. I am currently running Solaris 7 -> will
upgrading to Solaris 8 make this problem "moot"?
