We have recently installed a Silicon Graphics Indy workstation to
run one of our Bruker spectrometers and are using a Pinnacle Micro Vertex
(2.3 GB) magneto-optical disk drive to archive the NMR data. This works
quite nicely, with two exceptions:
1. Because Irix 5.3's media daemon (mediad) does not recognize the
Pinnacle Micro drive, MO disks must be formatted, mounted, and dismounted
manually from a Unix shell. This implies that the user must have superuser
privilege to mount and dismount his or her own disks. I have heard
conflicting reports as to whether this is resolved with Irix 6.x, which
will be supported by all Bruker software in the near future.
2. While the Pinnacle Micro drive has a good price-to-performance
ratio, technical and customer support for these drives is inadequate.
Consequently, I am interested to hear about any solutions to the
user disk mounting problem as well as any suggestions for alternative MO
drives which offer read/write compatibility with the Pinnacle Micro Vertex
drive.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
