WRT the air pressure, I would not feel comfortable running one of my bio
systems (with SJ, CRP, multiple chillers) on the edge like that. A simpler
system might be fine.
I currently run my set of spectrometers off our company's common liquid
nitrogen boil-off which averages about 100 psi, is regulated down to 85 at
the wall and to 80 or whatever is needed at POU. I run pneumatics and
temperature control off of different taps wherever possible.
In most of my previous institutions both as user and as manager (AV I-4, Inova)
the air supply was a dedicated compressor system. The optimal (but expensive)
configuration is a dual-compressor system, which extends the life of the
individual pumps, provides redundancy in case of failure, and allows
maintenance without disrupting NMR operations. Of the types I worked with I
thought the scroll-type compressors gave the best and most consistent
performance albeit at additional expense. You want to have as large of a
ballast tank as can reasonably be fit in the space and supported by your
chosen compressor system. The ritual of checking the automated drain on
this tank should become part of your religion, especially if you have a
cryoprobe.
You are also likely to need a serious air dryer -- I have had both good and
bad experiences with the Zeks hydronix systems. When they work their performance
is great and can accommodate high cfm. However, at my last installation we
suffered from constant problems with the solenoids on the switching valves,
and also had one valve (a butterfly) blow out completely.
Keep in mind that when purchasing a compressor you need to consider overall
airflow (cfm) as well as overall pressure. This is typically less of a worry
with building systems as they often have air to spare.
It might make sense to discuss an upgrade to the existing building air, or
try to figure out whether the current pressure, which seems a bit low, is
due to design or possibly a leak somewhere.
