%s character and JC-H

I have read of the correlation between the CH coupling constant and %s character
in the CH bond (Fleming and Williams' Spectroscopic Methods in Organic Chem).
However, this text doesn't mention how the correlation was obtained.

Could such a correlation be just that (derived from a plot of the %s character
and the CH coupling constant) or is it derived mathematically?

The correlation, BTW, is: 1JCH=5 x %s(CH)

Any help would be appreciated. If there is any interest I'll post the answers.
