We are in the process of designing a new laboratory space that will house 5
NMR spectrometers, an associated sample prep room and adjoining office space.
The subject of floor type will soon be discussed. I am keen to hear your
views on what has worked and what hasn't for you and your spaces. Of particular
interest is if you have epoxy painted floors or vinyl covering, in which
case specific details about make/model/type of material would be beneficial,
rather than just being 'liquid nitrogen-proof vinyl', for example.
Critical characteristics:
Liquid nitrogen resistant
Electrostatic resistant - ability to conduct charges to the ground
Anti-static
I understand there are many pros and cons for selecting any floor type, provided
these 3 key properties are met.
Our current facility has carpet in all spectrometer rooms. Has done for 30+
years, with carpet refitted for various room refurbishment projects over that
period. We've never had any problems with it. Our most recent spectrometer
room was completed earlier this year. It was going to have vinyl flooring;
the architect assured us it was N2-proof and was the same flooring being
used in the liquid nitrogen dispensing room. That flooring cracked during
commissioning of the liq.N2 equipment. Consequently, all our flooring was
ripped up and the same carpet tiles we use elsewhere were ordered and laid
in the 3 weeks before our engineer arrived to assemble and charge the
magnet. Better the devil you know.
