Job Description Summary
The NMR Research Lab Specialist will have primary responsibility for the optimal
maintenance and operation of the NMR spectrometers and helium recovery system
located in the Penn Vagelos Laboratory for Energy Science and Technology (VLEST),
which is currently under construction and scheduled for opening in Winter 2025.
This position will join the team of the Penn Chemistry NMR Facility, which is
currently staffed by a Facility Director and Assistant Facility Director. As of
summer 2024, the Penn NMR facility includes 8 Bruker solution-phase NMR instruments
and provides maintenance support for a 9th instrument, all located in the Department
of Chemistry two blocks away from VLEST. A new Bruker Avance NEO 500 MHz spectrometer
and Quantum Design helium liquefier and recovery system will be installed and operational
in VLEST upon opening, and the installation of a second NMR spectrometer in this
location is planned in the near future.
Job Description
The University of Pennsylvania is seeking an NMR Research Specialist to fill
a new staff scientist position in the Penn Chemistry NMR Facility. This new

* Ensure optimal maintenance and operation of the NMR spectrometers and

* Support researchers with and provide technical assistance in experimental
design, pulse programming, and data analysis.
* Train and supervise facility users (students and postdoctoral researchers).
* Maintain a clean and safe working environment in the laboratory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* M.S. in a research area that utilizes NMR spectroscopy with 3-5 years
of related experience in a research environment.
* Proficiency in operating and maintaining Bruker NMR spectrometers, consoles
and probes.
* Experience with common NMR software used for data collection and analysis.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to effectively
interact with and support the facility's diverse and multidisciplinary user base.
* Excellent organization skills.
Preferred:
* Ph.D. in a research area that utilizes NMR spectroscopy.
* Training and experience in both liquid and solid-state NMR techniques.
* Experience with the operation and maintenance of helium recovery systems.
* Some familiarity with instrumentation for EPR spectroscopy.
