Matthew, et. al.:
I bought some of those fast-n-tite fittings several years ago,
and here
is the source I finally found:
From December, 2009:
Part Number N6MC8 $2.95 each (3/8" transfer line)
Part Number N8MC8 $4.10 each (1/2" transfer line)
Fred C. Gilbert Company

These fittings are intended for use with plastic tubing. All that
is
required to modify them for use with helium transfers is:
- remove the metal washer that grips the plastic tubing;
- make sure the flat side of the nylon washer faces toward the
O-ring;
- Drill and tap a hole for a hose barb on one flat of the hex
wrench band;
- For use with 1/2" transfer lines, it may be necessary to open up
the
ID of the threaded portion to allow free flow of gas from the
hose barb
past the transfer line.
I took mine down to the machine shop and they drilled and tapped for a
hose barb
and then put on the lathe and took off another.01" or so on the ID of
the threaded
portion. It didn't take them long at all.
I'm sure Varian modified these themselves and that there is no
commercial source
of modified fittings.
